A Getaway to the Far North of the Mediterranean: The Rilke Trail, Castle Stories, and Trieste

Sometimes, just an hour's drive is enough to completely change the landscape. One sunny afternoon, my girlfriend and I set off from the Soča Guesthouse in Kanal ob Soči towards the Gulf of Trieste. In just a few hours, we visited three beautiful castles, walked one of the most stunning coastal paths, and ended our day among the lively streets of Trieste.

Duino Castle and Views Over the Cliffs

Our first destination was Duino Castle, which took us about twenty minutes by car from Kanal ob Soči.

We left the car in a free parking lot, from where the castle is just a few minutes' walk away. We only viewed its exterior, which is highly impressive on its own. The castle stands high above the sea and offers a magnificent view of the Gulf of Trieste.

If you decide to tour the interior, richly furnished historical rooms, museum collections, and exhibitions await you. A special feature of the castle is that it is still home to the noble Thurn und Taxis family today.

  • Opening hours: Open daily between 9:30 AM and 5:30 PM

  • Ticket prices: Ranges between 8 € and 11 €

There is also a small beach arranged in the immediate vicinity of the castle, but many visitors come here mainly because of the famous Rilke Trail.

The Rilke Trail – A Walk Between the Sea and the Karst Edge

Leading from Duino toward Sistiana is a panoramic path about two kilometers long, considered one of the most beautiful coastal trails in this part of the Adriatic.

The walk is not demanding. The path is mostly flat, rocky in places, and crisscrossed with tree roots.

The greatest charm of the trail lies in the views of the high limestone cliffs and the deep blue of the Gulf of Trieste. In addition to the natural beauty, the route also passes the remains of bunkers and observation posts from World War I.

We left our car in a small parking lot roughly halfway between Duino and Sistiana, where parking is free. However, most visitors choose the larger free parking lot in Sistiana and start the trail from there.

Miramare Castle – The White Pearl by the Sea

After our walk, we continued toward Miramare Castle, arriving after about a twenty-minute drive.

A single glance at the castle shows why it is considered one of the most photographed attractions around Trieste. The white palace stands right by the sea, surrounded by a large park full of exotic trees, flowers, and well-kept walking paths.

We left the car in a free parking lot right by the coast, and from there, a short flight of stairs leads you straight up to the castle complex.

Strolling through the gardens is free of charge and highly recommended to every visitor. If you have more time, you can also tour the castle's interior, where numerous historical rooms are preserved.

  • Opening hours: The museum is open daily from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM

  • Admission: Between €12 and €15

  • Note: The entire area also includes a protected marine reserve.

A Stroll Through Trieste

Our next stop was Trieste, located about a twenty-five-minute drive from Miramare.

We parked in a large parking lot right next to the city center, opposite the famous Piazza Unità d'Italia . Parking cost 1.80  per hour. From there, we set off on foot through the narrow city streets up to the Castle of San Giusto, which has reigned over the city for centuries.

On the castle hill, we took a short break for a drink and enjoyed the view over the roofs of Trieste and the port. We didn't visit the interior of the castle this time either, but we admired its mighty exterior. Trieste is a perfect location to get a drink and take in the local culture.

During a visit, you can enter the castle museum, the armory, the lapidary, and walk along the ramparts. Among the points of interest are the bronze statues of Mikez and Jakez (the historic bell-strikers), which are accompanied by an interesting local legend.

  • Opening hours: Open daily between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM

  • Ticket price: €7

Just a few steps away lie the remains of a Roman forum and basilica, which can be visited for free. We also recommend visiting the Cathedral of San Giusto, whose interior is adorned with beautiful Byzantine mosaics.

Italian Flavors Under One Roof

Before heading home, we walked through the central part of the city and visited the Eataly store, a true paradise for lovers of Italian cuisine.

On the shelves, you can find practically everything—from pasta, various oils, and cheeses to wines, desserts, and numerous regional specialties from different parts of Italy. Even if you don't plan on buying anything, visiting is an interesting experience for anyone who loves exploring local gastronomy.

Our Impression

We were most impressed by the Rilke Trail, as it offers one of the most beautiful views of the Gulf of Trieste, while Miramare, with its seaside location, is definitely one of the most beautiful castles we have ever visited. To top off the day, Trieste added just the right amount of Italian atmosphere, great architecture, and culinary inspiration.

This trip is an excellent choice for anyone looking to combine nature, history, and a vibrant city vibe in a single day.
