Sometimes, you don't need a whole weekend or even a full day for an unforgettable trip. A few free hours, good company or solo exploration, and plenty of good vibes are more than enough. That is how, one weekday afternoon, the two of us—as two thoroughly unathletic people—decided on a short getaway to the Tolmin region of Slovenia.
We started our journey in Kanal ob Soči, where we were staying at the Soča Guest House. We drove to Tolmin along a well-maintained, winding, and slightly crowded road, which took about 25 minutes. The road runs through the valley alongside the emerald Soča River, surrounded by hills where paragliders can often be seen soaring.
Paragliding in the Soča Valley
Many adrenaline junkies want to experience the Julian Alps and the Soča Valley from a bird's-eye view. Excellent thermal conditions, wind patterns, and the shape of the mountains create ideal conditions for paragliders.
More about paraglidingBeri Waterfall (Slap Beri)
Our first destination was the Beri Waterfall, located just a five-minute drive from Tolmin, near the village of Poljubinj. Navigating the narrow village streets, we arrived at a free gravel parking lot, from which a 20-minute walking trail leads to the waterfall.
The trail is very well-marked and winds through the forest. Along the way, you cross a few small bridges over the Godiča stream, making the walk even more pleasant. Even though our footwear was completely unsuitable for hiking (low-top, flat-soled city shoes), the trail didn't cause us any major problems.

Upon arriving at our destination, a beautiful clearing opens up with a small pool where you can freshen up. We decided against swimming, as the air near the waterfall is quite cool, and you get further refreshed by the water droplets spraying from the falls.

Unfortunately, dark clouds began to gather over the surrounding hills and thunder could be heard, so we left the waterfall early. In the end, it didn't rain, but it's always better to be safe than sorry.
Tolmin Gorges (Tolminska korita)
Our next stop was the Tolmin Gorges, located about a ten-minute drive from the Beri Waterfall.
There are three parking lots available for visitors:
Parking Lot 1 is closest to the entrance and costs €3 per hour.
Parking Lot 2 is free and is about a 20-minute walk away.
Parking Lot 3 is also free, and a free shuttle bus runs from there to the gorges.
We got lucky and found a spot in the first parking lot, saving some energy for our final destination of the day. The parking lot is small but very well-maintained, offering lockers, restrooms, and a souvenir shop.

The gorges are open every day from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, regardless of weather conditions. The adult ticket price is €12, with various discounts available depending on the visitor's age and status.
There were no queues, either at the ticket booth or at the park entrance. Nevertheless, we recommend buying tickets in advance, as the number of visitors is limited. Good news for pet owners—dogs are also allowed entry.
Although the full tour is supposed to take about an hour and a half, we walked the entire trail in an hour. The path is excellently maintained, safe, and easy. Some visitors even walked it in flip-flops.

The path leads you along the beautiful turquoise waters of the Tolminka and Zadlaščice rivers, climbing and descending via stairs, bridges, and wooden walkways. In the lower sections near the river, the air is pleasantly cool, which is especially welcome on hot summer days.
In the park, you can fill up on drinking water, see a thermal spring, explore small caves, and cross numerous bridges at various heights. The most famous sight is definitely the Bear's Head (Medvedova glava)—a boulder wedged between two canyon walls that resembles a bear's head. Swimming is not allowed in the park, as it is a protected nature area.

The views of the surrounding hills and gorges are magnificent, and there is an endless supply of photo opportunities. We took a ton of pictures, and we easily could have taken even more.
Kozlov Rob Castle (Grad Kozlov Rob)
The last destination of our trip was Kozlov Rob Castle, which rises on a small hill above Tolmin.
We left our car at the free Parking Lot 2, which is part of the Tolmin Gorges parking facilities. Right across the road, a forested gravel path begins heading up toward the castle.

Visitors can choose from four different trails. We opted for the Castle Trail (Grajska pot), which is considered moderately challenging and usually takes about 30 minutes. A bit more demanding is the Forest Nature Trail (Gozdna učna pot), which takes around 40 minutes.
Since we wanted to catch the last rays of sunshine, we hurried up the hill and reached the castle in just over fifteen minutes. By then, the sun had already disappeared behind the grey clouds, but we were greeted at the top by a stunning view of Tolmin and the surrounding hills.

It is also possible to visit the castle museum, which is open daily except Mondays and Tuesdays, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The ticket price is very modest, under €5. Unfortunately, because we arrived at the castle a bit too late, we weren't able to see the museum.

After a few minutes of rest and some sliding down the gravel path in our flat-soled city shoes, we headed back along the same winding road toward Kanal ob Soči, bringing our afternoon getaway to a close.
Our Impression
The trip was truly fantastic. In just a few hours, we experienced a waterfall, one of the most beautiful gorges in Slovenia, and a wonderful view from a castle. Nevertheless, we recommend slightly better hiking footwear, as our feet are seriously aching the next day after all that walking.
We also recommend bringing enough fluids and a snack. Interestingly, the weather app on our phones kept forecasting sunshine the whole time, but in the end, there wasn't any.
The entire trip took us about four hours, as we were rushing a bit the whole time due to the threatening storm clouds. Even so, it was one of those spontaneous afternoons that leave you with the fondest memories.
If you are looking for an idea for a short yet experience-packed excursion around Slovenia, the combination of Beri Waterfall, the Tolmin Gorges, and Kozlov Rob Castle is definitely a guaranteed hit.
