How to Get from Ljubljana to Kanal ob Soči: Our Favorite Routes & Stops

Slovenia may be small, but it is incredibly diverse. The journey from the capital to our accommodation Soca Guesthouse in Kanal ob Soči can take you over a majestic mountain pass, through lush green valleys, or past sunny Mediterranean vineyards.

Whether you are just arriving from Ljubljana or heading out on a day trip to the capital, here is a quick overview of the routes we love to take ourselves.

Quick Overview of All Four Options

Route 1: The Fastest & Most Comfortable Route (Highway & Vipava Valley)

• Route: Ljubljana → Postojna → Razdrto → Vipava → Ajdovščina → Nova Gorica → Kanal ob Soči

• Drive time: approx. 1 hour 30 mins – 1 hour 50 mins

• Distance: ~130 km

• Vignette required: YES (Slovenian highway e-vignette)

If you’ve had a long journey to Slovenia, are traveling late at night, or simply want to dive into the emerald Soča River as soon as possible, this is your best option. The route mainly follows the highway and express road through the scenic Vipava Valley. Once you leave the express road in Nova Gorica, you are just a pleasant 20-minute drive along the Soča River away from Kanal.

💡 Our top stop recommendation: If you still want to take a short coffee or snack break along the way, stop at Vipavski Križ – a tiny, fairy-tale fortified village perched on a hill with beautiful views of the vineyards.

Route 2: Historic & Green Route (Via Idrija & Tolmin)

• Route: Ljubljana → Logatec → Idrija → Cerkno → Most na Soči → Tolmin → Kanal ob Soči

• Drive time: approx. 2 hours – 2 hours 15 mins

• Distance: ~115 km

• Vignette required: NO (entire route follows regional roads)

This route is a perfect blend of lush nature, winding roads, and rich cultural heritage. From central Slovenia, it leads you through the forests of Idrija and along the Soča River down to Kanal. It is exceptionally scenic, yet avoids high mountain passes.

What to see along the way?

• Town of Idrija: A UNESCO World Heritage site known for the second-largest mercury mine in the world and exquisite hand-laced Idrija lace.

• Culinary Stop: While in Idrija, trying Idrijski žlikrofi (traditional pasta pockets filled with potato filling) is an absolute must!

• Most na Soči: A charming town by a turquoise reservoir lake where you can pause for a relaxing stroll along the shore or take a ride on the boat Lucija.

Route 3: Scenic Countryside Route (Via Škofja Loka & Cerkno)

• Route: Ljubljana → Medvode → Škofja Loka → Gorenja vas → Cerkno → Most na Soči → Tolmin → Kanal ob Soči

• Drive time: approx. 2 hours 15 mins – 2 hours 30 mins

• Distance: ~115–120 km

• Vignette required: NO (entire route follows regional roads)

This route is a fantastic choice for anyone looking to skip the highway and vignette while enjoying a smooth, comfortable, and visually captivating drive. It guides you through the beautiful Poljane Valley and over the Kladje Pass above Cerkno, opening up gorgeous panoramic views of the surrounding hills.

What to see along the way?

• Škofja Loka: Take a walk through one of the oldest and best-preserved medieval towns in Slovenia.

• Visoko Manor in the Poljane Valley: A lovely stop right by the Poljanska Sora River, featuring a cozy café, a playground, and a beautiful park (the former estate of writer Ivan Tavčar).

• Cerkno: A pleasant small town surrounded by hills, known for its rich traditions (such as the Laufarija carnival) and natural surroundings.

Route 4: Alpine Panoramic Route (Via Kranjska Gora & Vršič Pass)

• Route: Ljubljana → Kranjska Gora → Vršič Pass → Trenta → Bovec → Kobarid → Kanal ob Soči

• Drive time: approx. 3 hours – 3 hours 30 mins (without long stops)

• Distance: ~170 km

• Vignette required: Depends on your choice of road (if taking the highway from Ljubljana to Kranjska Gora, an e-vignette is required; if taking regional roads via Medvode and Kranj, no vignette is needed).

This route is not just a drive from A to B – it's a full-day adventure! It takes you through the very heart of the Julian Alps and over Slovenia’s highest mountain pass – Vršič (1,611 m).

What to see along the way?

• Scenic stops before the climb: Right before the mountain serpentines begin, you'll find fairy-tale Lake Jasna in Kranjska Gora with its dramatic mountain backdrop, as well as the historic Russian Chapel tucked away in the forest along the road up Vršič.

• Vršič Pass & Trenta: Navigating 50 iconic hairpin turns delivers incredible mountain panoramas. Down in the Trenta Valley, stop to admire the emerald source of the Soča River or the Great Soča Gorge (Velika korita Soče).

• Bovec & Kobarid: In Bovec – Slovenia's outdoor sports capital – enjoy views of the mighty Boka Waterfall. Kobarid charms visitors with its rich history (Napoleon's Bridge, WWI Museum) and great food stops for refreshments or famous local pancakes.
