Most travelers know Kanal ob Soči mainly as a place they drive through on their way to Bovec or Tolmin. The two of us, however, decided to take our time and explore the town where we were staying. Despite having a population of just over a thousand people, it hides much more than you would expect at first glance.
Our day began at the Soča Guesthouse, from where we set off on foot to explore the streets of this historic town.
A Walk Through the Historic Center
Kanal ob Soči has a rich history; the first bridge over Soča river was built by the Romans, and the town's subsequent development dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries. In the Middle Ages, the old town core was enclosed by a defensive wall, parts of which are still preserved today. Interestingly, the accomodation we stayed in actually stands on the remains of the former town wall.
During our walk, we visited the town's main sights. We stopped by the Neptune Fountain, which has adorned the square since 1815, and then continued toward the famous bridge over the Soča.

The bridge rises about 17 meters above the river and is the most recognizable symbol of Kanal. Once a year, it becomes the venue for a traditional bridge-diving competition, which draws numerous visitors and competitors to town.
Since we also love exploring local offerings, we visited a cheese dairy, as well as a local grocery shop and butcher, where locals do their daily shopping.
Refreshing at One of the Most Beautiful Town Beaches on the Soča
As the afternoon was pleasantly warm, we swapped our walking clothes for swimsuits and headed to the town beach on the left bank of the Soča.
The beach is well-maintained, pebbly, and provides very easy access to the water. The most interesting part, however, is hidden a bit further downstream, where natural rock terraces have been transformed into popular spots for cliff jumping.
A unique feature of this part of the Soča is that the water current is very calm due to river regulations. While swimming, you barely feel like you are in a river, making the area completely safe.

On the other side of the river, there is an even larger sandy beach, which is especially suitable for families with children. Due to the shallow entry and more space, the atmosphere there is a bit more lively.
If you prefer more privacy, a third managed beach is just a few minutes' walk away, located below the fire station. There is much more space there, so everyone can easily find their own quiet corner by the water.
Evening Vibes at Kontrada
After swimming, we returned through the old town core toward our accommodation. Our path led us across Kontrada Square, which represents the heart of cultural life in Kanal.

The square is home to the Riko Debenjak Gallery and a small shop with unique ceramics. Right on that particular evening, the locals had even turned the square into an open-air cinema.
Dinner by the River
As hunger began to set in, we headed along a well-maintained walking path by the Soča to Okrepčevalnica Pirih, which is open every day from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
The restaurant is located right by the river and offers a pleasant ambiance under a roof and sun umbrellas, where you can enjoy views of the emerald Soča during dinner.

The menu mainly features pizzas, grilled dishes, burgers, and calamari, with prices mostly ranging between €10 and €15 per person. Due to the popularity of the place, we recommend booking a table in advance.
A Walk Through Pečno Park (Park Pečno)
After dinner, we wanted to get a bit more exercise, so we walked toward Pečno Park, located about a fifteen-minute walk from the town center.
A quiet road with a gentle incline leads to it, opening up into a forest park filled with various wooden structures, art installations, and themed points.

The park is quite unique and very different from classic walking paths. At times, it feels like a mix of a fairytale forest and a contemporary outdoor art exhibition.
We believe families with younger children would enjoy exploring the many hidden corners of the park. But it is also perfect if you need just a moment of peace and serenity.
Sunset on Korada
Not wanting to end the day just yet and wishing to catch the last rays of sunshine, we got into the car and drove toward Korada, the highest peak of Goriška Brda.
After about half an hour of driving—during which we had to be extra vigilant due to deer on the road—we arrived at the mountain hut just below the summit.

We watched the sunset in silence, bringing our day to a close in the most beautiful way possible.
Our Impression
Kanal ob Soči is proof that even smaller towns hide a wealth of interesting attractions. Although many people only visit it in passing, in our opinion, it deserves at least one full day of exploration.
