When we think of summer in the Middle Soča Valley, a postcard-worthy image quickly comes to mind: a magnificent 17-meter stone bridge spanning the emerald Soča River. It is precisely this fairytale backdrop in Kanal ob Soči that serves as the venue for one of Slovenia's most spectacular sports and tourism events every year—the international bridge diving competition.

Every summer, the event attracts top divers from across Europe and a crowd of thousands who watch with bated breath as fearless acrobats leap into the river's depths.

Why Mid-August? The Connection to the Holiday

The diving competition in Kanal takes place every year on the weekend closest to August 15th (Assumption of Mary).

The choice of date has deep local roots: the parish church in Kanal is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, making August 15th the central local holiday (known locally as "rožnca"). This festive period has become the ideal setting for organizing the main summer spectacle of the entire valley.

History of the Competition: From Local Bravery to an International Series

Diving into the Soča has a long tradition in Kanal, which over the decades has evolved into a top-tier competition:

• Local test of courage: Long before official competitions, local young men proved their fearlessness by jumping from the 17-meter stone bridge. A plunge into the emerald depths was considered an unofficial rite of passage for local youth.

• Official beginning (1989): The first officially organized competition took place in 1989. Local enthusiasts set clear competition rules, ensured safety with rescue divers stationed below the bridge, and attracted divers from across the region.

• International renown: Over time, the Kanal dives became an indispensable part of both the Slovenian and international high-diving circuits. Competitors from Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Serbia, and legendary divers from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, regularly participate.

Legends of the Kanal Bridge

The most victories in the traditional dives from the 17-meter bridge in Kanal ob Soči were achieved by the legendary diver from Trieste, Pino Auber, who is considered a true icon of this event. Over his rich career, he won at this venue six times.

Pino Auber competed in Kanal from 1993 all the way until 2016, thrilling audiences with his courage and charisma well into his late 70s. As an interesting note, the tradition of successful feet-first diving performances is continued by his grandson, Gabriele Auber.

In addition to Auber, the most successful multiple winners and standout competitors in the history of the Kanal dives include:

• Borko Miladinović from Užice, Serbia, who consistently dominated the head-first ("swallow dive") and complex figure diving categories for years.

• Jan Vončina from Spodnja Idrija, who likewise frequently claimed top spots in figure and swallow dives.

The event is not only a high-diving competition, but a full-day summer festival for all generations:

• Organizer: The execution, logistics, and safety are managed by the Kanal ob Soči Tourist Board (Turistično društvo Kanal ob Soči) in cooperation with the Bridge Diving Sports Club (Športno društvo Skoki z mostu), the Municipality of Kanal, and local rescue divers and first responders.

• Registration: Due to the height requirements and safety protocols, registration must be completed in advance through the official call by TD Kanal ob Soči. All competitors must demonstrate prior high-diving experience, sign a liability waiver, and attend a safety briefing.
